    ej257 swap in wrx....

noob question, to build my motor i can just buy a built block and throw it in my 09 wrx???

i want to do a stock ej257 becuase its forged already and do cams, with some stronger bearings, while using the stock wrx heads, reason for the bearings is becasue i already spun a bearing in my 09,

so yea its just a simple swap right??? i dont think 1900 for a new block, forged, is bad, well thanks in advance for any help.....

    Re: ej257 swap in wrx....

pretty sure the only difference between the ej255 and ej257 from 2008 and up are the heads on the 257...they have both AVCS on intake and exhaust whereas the 255 only has it on the intake....the pistons are not forged in the Sti motor IIRC....there are posts on nasioc that say the 255 is actually a beter motor for making power (higher compression), but then again the Sti is better suited for power....

I too am under the impression that the pistons in the STI is cast these days. Why not just upgrade internals on the ej255 you already have? Subaru did replace your motor didn't they?

STi's do not have forged pistons. I'de say go with that block you found and go get some new forged pistons and ARP studs everywhere.

also... i have a stock '08 WRX block that i need to get rid of.

    Re: ej257 swap in wrx....

I know this is an old thread, but I currently ran into a situation where I'm removing my block and am considering swapping an ej257 while I'm at it. since the differences between the 255 and 257 are not complex, should my stock (08) wrx ecu be able to support an ej257 block? Found a shortblock local and will have a professional shop install it, but just want to be sure I'm not gona have to look for an STi ecu while I'm at it ;D

    Re: ej257 swap in wrx....

there is NO difference between the 255 and 257 block. The sti pistons are NOT forged or cast, they are hypereutectic, so are the 255's. The heads on the 257 are different. they are avcs on both cams (intake and exhaust). your stock wrx computer will not run the exhaust avcs. I would look at the short block packages that places like import image racing offers. just clean up your stock heads and reuse them. also i would not buy the cometic head gaskets either, just get stock ones.
Both the 255 and 257 have forged rods, but are not strong at all. the 09 and up factory sti cranks are Nitrite treated. you can tell because they are black not silver metal color.

    Re: ej257 swap in wrx....

i am installe a ej257 stock block as said above zero difference install wise.

cast piston still so what lots are doing is buying them with a swapped piston set.
i recommned you contact outfront motorsport through them or vim i got a fully built bottom end rods nitrated crank and mahle piston acl bearings for 2700 so for 800 more a full built motor .

or get a new sti block with swapped pistons .
