I'm an experienced self-taught mechanic and can fix pretty much anything, but don't know anything about Subarus. I found a 2004 WRX hatchback with 180k miles for $5,000, and I need a cheap (and fun) commuter. It looks good, supposedly had the turbo replaced at 50k. Currently on its third owner who has had it for less than a year, bought it because he needed a car, now has 3 (reason for selling supposedly, short ownership makes me nervous though). No maintenance records. Small oil leak, and a small leak from a "coolant cap" (overflow bottle? I don't know, I haven't seen it yet).
I plan on doing a thorough inspection, compression test, etc. I've learned from experience that some model years of some vehicles are cursed though, or at least have major defects. Like how 2005 V6 Toyota Tacomas ALL have leaky head gaskets. Is there anything in particular I should know about a 2004 Impreza WRX, or should I just look for the usual wear, tear, and neglect?
