Howdy, I am the crabby, middle aged original owner of an '04 Subaru Impreza WRX sedan. Overall, I've loved this thing even though we're getting to the point where every rattle and squeak costs four figures to deal with.

Now it's a p0420 error. And I think there ought to be a law that anything with 420 in it should be pleasant and laid back.

BUT NOOOOOOOOO. Local mechanic wants to charge $890 for a new cat, + $240 labor.

Does anyone know which of the three cats the p0420 refers to? If it's the down pipe, isn't it cheaper just to get anew downpipe with a cat in it? Heck (see, no swearing), aren't there entire catted turbo-back exhausts for less than $890? Pretty sure there are.
