I like to keep an extra key in my wallet for those rare cases I lock the keys in the car somehow. This means I have to cut that huge plastic key head off to get in in there. Guess what, these new keys are rather special and expensive.

$63 dealer price for the key blank and about 1/2 hour shop time to cut and program (figure ~$35).

Most disconcerting there is NO option to just have a plain steel key to just get the door open (no transponder). That price does beat my Land Rover but at least on that you get a built in remote on the key for a ~$110 key blank. BUT on that you could at least get a ~$5 steel key blank to open the doors (no transponder).

I'm just thinking about butchering the valet key, as I have a wagon who needs that thing anyway.

Take apart your light grey Valet key and keep that one in your wallet. You don't need the transponder to open your doors.
