Engine code P0017

I have a 2017 wrx and I’m having an on going issue w a check engine light. The check engine light, stability control warning light, hill assist light come on and the abs light will come on and go off from time to time. I had the codes looked up and it said the P0017, variable valve timing solenoid. At first my mechanic replaced the camshaft sensor and the light came back on during the test drive. He Then replaced the VVT and a new oil sensor. About a week later the check engine lights came back on. My mechanic spoke to someone at another shop and he was told the model year that I have, they have had issues with built up oil sludge in the engine and that’s most likely the issue. They said that I pretty much have 2 options to either rebuild the engine or get a whole new one. I’m a little confused by that bc my car only has 75,000 miles on it and I’ve always been on top of my oil changes. The car when driving seems to run fine. The noticeable problem is when at idle from time to time it runs rough like a misfire and the car will even shake. Then it’s like the timing resets, the engine rpm jumps up to around 1500 then settles at normal idle rpm and the car seems fine but the check engine lights stay on at all times. Anyone else have this issue or any ideas?

I'll begin an opinion. Based on this mechanics idea that sludge be a problem, that oiling in general has become a problem for the engine. Without getting too involved to start I think I would pull plugs and look for oil burning. The thought being that oiling is an issue, therefore eventually cylinder excessive wear will manifest in oil consumption. Id also consider a simple compression test to just see where the engine is from that perspective. This is just a start, Im sure there are going to be additional ideas after this one. Ill watch for comments.

Thank you. After replacing sensors not working I’ll try any new starting point to trouble shoot the problem
