2009 Subaru WRX Priced Below ,000

Date posted: 08-07-2008

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Subaru's new 2009 WRX will start below ,000, Inside Line has learned. The current 2008 WRX starts at ,995 including a 5 delivery charge.

For 2009, the WRX's 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine's power rating will be increased to 265 horsepower. A five-speed manual is the only transmission option. Stiffer spring rates, larger antiroll bars, retuned dampers and upper strut mounts from the WRX STI, along with an STI grille and front and rear spoilers, add to the changes.

Subaru also told IL the 2009 Subaru Impreza GT, a new model that keeps the current WRX's 224-hp engine, will be priced near the 2009 WRX. The Impreza GT carries a comparable MSRP due to more standard equipment, including a four-speed automatic transmission and sunroof.

Subaru is expected to announce complete pricing for the 2009 Impreza lineup next week.

What this means to you: Relief for Subaru fans who anticipated a bigger price hike for the more powerful WRX. — Kelly Toepke, News Editor

Thats crazy, considering the base 08 wrx doesn't come with the aero package and the 09 does.

So if you have a 08 wrx premium package you got royally screwed and if you have a 08 base wrx you also got screwed, but not royally.

If it's actually at the same price point as the base WRX, than this is a big **** YOU to Subaru. I picked up my car up June 6th.

It's ok I only spent 4k to get around the same performance as the 09 stock. Thanks subaru. Though my subaru dealer told me to come to the dealership on launch of the 09 with all the other 08 wrx owners for a ankle grabbing party...not quite sure what that's about but I hope there is cake.

edit: 4k is an overstatement more like ~3k but still *angry face*

SUBARU CANADA LAUNCHES 2009 IMPREZA WRX
August 07, 2008

New WRX265 joins lineup with enhanced engine for significantly more power.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario - Subaru Canada, Inc. (SCI) today introduced the 2009 Impreza WRX-now with a choice of two trim levels. Fans of rally-style performance can now choose between an entry level Impreza WRX and the new high-performance WRX265 with a more powerful turbo engine and a host of features engineered to enhance the performance driving experience. The 2009 Impreza lineup arrives in Canadian dealerships in September.

Both Impreza WRX models are available in 4- and 5-door configurations, but the new WRX265 is an even more athletic driving machine with features that include:

A potent turbocharged and intercooled engine that produces 265 horsepower and 244 lb-ft of torque.

A new power tilting and sliding glass moonroof.

Performance-tuned suspension.

17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with Dunlop SP SPORT summer performance tires.

Premium audio system, including Sirius Satellite Radio and a 3-month trial subscription.

Tilting/telescoping steering wheel with integrated audio and cruise control switches.

Gun metal aluminum-alloy sport pedals.

"The Impreza WRX continues to be a popular choice for affordable performance," said Katsuhiro Yokoyama, president and CEO of SCI. "Now, buyers have even more choice, with two models allowing them to set their own priorities when shopping for an outstanding combination of power, versatility, and safety."

Every Impreza WRX is extremely well equipped with features that enhance its performance personality. These include air conditioning with automatic climate control and air filtration; tilting and telescoping steering wheel with integrated cruise control; heated, rally-type front seats; 17-inch alloy wheels; multi-reflector halogen fog lights; power-adjustable, folding, heated side mirrors; engine immobilizer and anti-theft security system; disc brakes at all four corners (ventilated in front, solid in rear); and Subaru's Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) and Traction Control systems.

Standard sound system on the WRX is a 4-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA stereo with Radio Data System, vehicle speed sensitive volume and auxiliary audio input jack. The WRX265 is further enhanced with a premium audio system with four upgraded speakers, two tweeters, and SRS CS-Auto audio enhancement.

Powered for Performance
The 2009 Impreza WRX is powered by Subaru's 2.5-litre DOHC, 16-valve, 4-cylinder Subaru BOXER that's turbocharged and intercooled to produce 224 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 226 lb-ft of torque at just 2,800 rpm. This engine has twice been named International Engine of the Year in the 2.0-litre to 2.5-litre category, most recently in 2008.

The new WRX265 is equipped with a 2.5-litre DOHC, 16-valve, 4-cylinder Subaru BOXER with a high-pressure turbocharger and intercooler. This engine develops 265 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 244 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm.

Both of these muscular powerplants are harnessed to a slick-shifting 5-speed manual transmission. For 2009, no automatic transmission is offered on Impreza WRX models.

The WRX also uses a new shot-peen open-type rear differential. The shot peening process better prepares the differential for the added load, stress and performance expected from this model. The internal differential assembly (crown, pinion gears) is sandblasted with fine metal granules, producing a smoother, harder surface that is stronger and cleaner for improved drivability and durability with reduced gear noise.

Designed for Versatility as well as Performance
The Impreza chassis is designed to be both rigid and comfortable with high-tension steel at key structural points. The design helps keep weight down, while the 2,620 mm (103.2 inch) wheelbase allows for crisp handling and a roomy interior, and helps protect occupants from noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH).

Impreza's double-wishbone rear suspension provides a refined ride and a quiet cabin. At the same time, its compact layout creates minimal intrusion into the cargo area for a deep and wide luggage compartment. On 5-door models, the wide and flat load floor can accommodate two golf bags with the rear seats in the upright position.

In the WRX sedan, which is 165 mm (6.5 inches) longer than the 5-door model, the extra space provides for a larger, deeper trunk that will take three golf bags. On all Impreza models, the 60/40 split-folding rear seat boosts cargo capacity and convenience even further.

Standard 17-inch 10-spoke aluminum alloy wheels create an added sporty touch. The 4-door sedans are also equipped with red tail lamp lenses, a unique chrome strip that visually widens the tail, and dual tailpipe outlets, one per side. The 5-door WRX is equipped with a single, larger outlet.

The WRX preserves its rally heritage with performance-design front seats that integrate the backrest and head restraint. The sporty instrument panel uses electroluminescent gauges with indicator needles that sweep the gauge faces upon engine startup for a dramatic effect.

User-Friendly Technology
Both the standard and optional audio systems feature the Radio Data System, which can display a variety of information, including song titles and artists. The WRX265 has SIRIUS Satellite Radio already installed and comes with a 3-month trial subscription.

Auto-off headlights are a traditional Subaru convenience that can help preserve battery life, and the leather-wrapped steering wheel tilts and telescopes as well as providing easy access to cruise control and audio buttons. The Hill Holder System is also standard.

Outstanding Levels of Safety
Impreza is built using the advanced Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame body structure with front and rear crumple zones. All 2009 WRX models also have a 4-wheel/4-channel/4-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. There are 3-point seatbelts for all seats (height-adjustable for outboard positions), active front seat head restraints, and front seatbelts with electrically triggered pre-tensioners and load limiters.

Every 2009 Impreza is equipped with standard side-curtain airbags and front seat-mounted side airbags. The dual-stage Subaru Advanced Frontal Airbag System (SRS) provides a driver's side front airbag that deploys according to the vehicle's rate of deceleration. The system uses highly sensitive g-load sensors and computer algorithms to measure the unique levels of protection required in a collison.

The passenger-side front airbag deploys according to information received from a sensor module that determines if the passenger seat is occupied, if the seat belt is secured, and the weight of the occupant. An airbag indicator light is located on the dashboard.

Advanced Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) and Traction Control systems are also standard. In a system unique to Subaru, it works in harmony with the full-time AWD. If the system detects understeer or oversteer, it will use AWD, braking, and reduced engine power to reduce instability and help regain control.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
The foundation of every Subaru is the Symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Driving System. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is a system that includes Subaru's BOXER engine and a full-time power distribution system with a low centre of gravity for exceptional handling precision.

The WRX and WRX265 are equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission and use a viscous-coupling locking centre differential that splits power 50/50, front and rear, all the time.

I'm a little surprised that Subaru has made all these changes for the 09 WRX, but I think having a WRX and a WRX265 (in Canada) sounds good to me. I'm very happy with my 08 WRX and the only things that really bug me about it is the front grill (I still have the original :-X) and there's no auto down for the passenger window. I really like having 224 hp, but 265 would have been really nice too. I think the 08's will have better gas mileage because of the hp increase which is fine by me. The red stitching on the 09 WRX is nice, but it's not for me. The 09 should be priced a little more than the 08 with all these changes. If it's priced the same I thinkl I will be a little dissapointed, but not very much.

If the pricepoint ends up being that low then I would agree that we got screwed. Though, I'm ok with it. Shit happens.

I don't feel too bad. ONly leasing mine until spring of 2010. However, if I had bought mine, I'd be kinda pissed. It is sorta a big F**K You from Subaru. However this being said, enjoy what you have, not what you don't.

I'm not to worried, I needed a car then and bigger and better will always come out for the same price. However, the turbo will be available for those of you who want to upgrade with out voiding warranty. Just think the 09 owners will be upgrading their cars and there will be parts available for cheap. I see it as positive instead of the F you some of you say.

Why do people keep saying you can upgrade to the '09 turbo and retain the warranty? Just because it's a factory part, it doesn't mean you can just do whatever you want.

Agreed, you can't upgrade the turbo and expect to keep your warranty (even though it might be a factory turbo).

That being said, WE DID NOT GET SCREWED. There will always be a faster car. Each year, as a company, I EXPECT Subaru to improve on the WRX. Why wouldn't they?! I love my '08. Would I take an '09? Of course, but it's not like Subaru is screwing us over by improving on a car that we happened to buy a year earlier.

Are people going to be saying the '09 owners got screwed when the 2010 WRX comes out and has a 6-speed? Enjoy your cars and be happy knowing that SOA just played the part of the guinea pig. We now KNOW that our transmissions can handle a larger turbo and a stage 2 setup with no issues.

That right there is the key! There will ALWAYS be something Bigger and Better!

I agree its not like its the first time this has happened in history. A few years ago maybe 6 the corvette jump from up 50+ hp, the Maxima jumped from 225 to 255 and mustang went up 35 or so hp up to 300.... The list goes on so don't feel bad cars get better every year.

Have the WRXs gotten better each year? This is the first Scoobie I have owned and I thought they were all pretty much the same till this body style. But, I really don't know all that much about the '02-'07s.

there was an engine change in 2006 to the 2.5L.

i also went to the dealership today to see if they had any news about the 09's or some info about it and the sales rep had no idea about any changes, he suggested that it would only be minor because he had not heard any thing yet. he also said that he has not recieved the booklet stating changes for the 09's which usually comes in at least 2months in advanced. dont no if he was just playing dumb but he really did look clueless when i was telling him what subaru has been saying.

any one have an idea when the 09's should be coming out.?

Expect them to continue to play dumb till the 09's actually come in. They want to get rid of their current inventory first.
