Toyota and Subaru are joining forces to develop a sensational new sports coup?© together, shown above in an Autocar image.
An inside source revealed top-secret sketches, showing that the car‚Äôs brief is to be compact, lightweight, rear drive and fast. Although the Subaru and Toyota versions of this coup?© will look different from one another around the front and rear, both will be powered by Subaru‚Äôs 2.0-litre flat four engine, making this the first time that a Subaru boxer engine has powered a Toyota.
A naturally aspirated version of the petrol boxer engine with 175bhp is being considered for the base model, and there is potential for a hot 2.5-litre turbocharged model later.
This will be a car inspired by the classic rear-drive AE86 Toyota Corolla GT coup?© from the 1980s, a car known for tail-happy handling. Yet beneath the skin we can expect a reworked Impreza, shortened, lightened and with a bespoke coup?© body.

AutoCar UK

AutoCar procured a sketch of the oft-rumored and all-but-confirmed lightweight coupe that's being jointly developed between Subaru and Toyota, and their sources confirm that the final design will be signed off in July. According to the Brit pub, both automakers will have their own version of the rear-wheel-drive, two-door, powered by Subaru's own 175 hp, 2.0-liter boxer engine. A 2.5-liter, turbocharged version is also being considered, which might send power to all four wheels in a nod to the historic Celica GT4. Sales are expected to begin in Japan, the UK and North America in 2010. Here's hoping they can keep it under the $20k mark when it hits U.S.shores.

I've had a discussion with friends about this and we all came to the same conclusion: if it isn't offered with at least an AWD option, it's not a Subaru.

If that car was sold as an Turbo AWD my wife would have one in a second! Then, by default, I would have one also! Just think how stupid Subaru will feel if it comes out and is a huge success.
