most of the info can be found here:

just a few basics, it's the standard turbo on the 06+ Legacy GT and Spec B. It replaced the VF40. The compressor housing is a bit different from the VF40, supposedly to increase mid-range performance.
If you're planning to go this route, they can be had between $300-500 used over at LGT.com. The price depends on the condition and mileage. Also, I read somewhere that the VF46 doesnt have a lot more CFM (cubic feet per minute) than the TD04. However, I did see a stage 2+ VF40 LGT go for 276WHP on a dynojet.

Anything in particular this tuner needs? This particular turbo has nothing too special about it and is another generation to turbos familiar to Subaru specialists. I'm just being defensive for you bro as I wouldn't want you to send it to someone who doesn't know Subaru.

thanks a lot guys, i already bought a vf46 from another member on here with only 5k miles for a good price! my tuner knows every import like the back of his hand. he told me he has not delt with the vf46, so i just figured i would see what the differences are from the vf40. i know he can figure out any issues that might come around, i just thought i would learn as much to try to help out!

Good luck with the upgrade. :)
Make sure to post your impressions and results when all done please. Should be a wonderful upgrade route. I am sure others would like to know how it turns out as well.
