One of the longest-standing events on the calendar, Acropolis has long been regarded as the season’s toughest event. Sitting well into European summertime, the gravel routes surrounding the ancient city of Athens will be notoriously hot and punishing on crews and cars alike.

The Subaru World Rally Team have entered two all-new Impreza WRC2008s for the Acropolis Rally. Petter Solberg / Phil Mills will drive car number five and Chris Atkinson / St?©phane Pr?©vot will be aboard number six. Solberg and Mills finished third on this event last year, and 2008 will be Atkinson‚Äôs fourth running. His highest finish was sixth last year, alongside Pr?©vot.

Driver quotes
Petter Solberg: “We finished third here last year and this time we have the new car, so I’ll be really pushing for a strong result. It’s a very difficult event; very rocky and hot, and the stages have always been very rough so it’s hard on us and the cars. We’ve had a few days in the new car now, so I have a good feeling from it and really hope that we’ll be in a good position to fight at the front. I’ll be at 110 per cent, definitely.”

Chris Atkinson: “It’s the first time out in a new car so it’s very exciting but you’re always a little cautious! If the feeling’s good I’ll be pushing straight away. There’s no reason not to, and obviously I’m looking forward to the opportunity to see where we are with the car. We know it’s going to be a very tough event as there are so many variables, so it won’t be easy but I hope we can take another step in the right direction and start to close up to the frontrunners.”

Citroen's Daniel Sordo was quickest in the shakedown for the Acropolis Rally of Greece on Thursday morning, the seventh round in the 2008 FIA World Rally Championship.

Sordo completed the 3.44 kilometre test stage, situated 5.27km north of the service park, in 2 minutes 26.3 seconds.

Further down the order Jari-Matti Latvala and Federico Villagra were joint seventh, although the former went off on his second pass and hit a tree.

Driver quotes from service A (after SS3)
30 May 2008

Subaru's new Impreza off to a dusty debut in Greece
Impreza WRC2008 #5
Petter Solberg: “Well it was not bad at all this morning. Things worked well and we didn’t have any problems at all. It’s good and I am very happy so far. We’re pushing hard but it’s quite early and we’ll just do little bits as we go to try and get it just right. It’s very important for us to be at this service with no problems. The car worked very well and I am happy. I am enjoying my new car so it is really good fun.”

Impreza WRC2008 #6
Chris Atkinson: “We had no major problems this morning with the new car which is really good. We had a good clean run but ok, our road position didn’t help and we’re not quite there yet. Considering how rough stage three is, we got through there no problem and the car is running well. We’ll find more speed when the whole package is working well for sure, but at the moment we will make changes here and there to get that and just keep pushing.”

Flash Report from Crash.net:
Subaru number two driver Chris Atkinson has retired from day two of the Acropolis Rally of Greece.

Atkinson, who had begun the leg in eighth, set the fourth best time in the opening test of the day. However his car refused to start before SS9, the 16.60 kilometre-run through Pissia, due to an electrical issue. (what a pisser!) pun intended!

It is not yet known if he will be able to rejoin the fold under the SupeRally format on Sunday.

Atkinson is the second 'works' retirement, as Munchi's Ford 'guest' driver Aris Vovos also went out this morning. The local star was sidelined after SS8 with steering problems. He had been running twelfth overall.

More to follow later...

Subaru number two driver Chris Atkinson was 'annoyed' to be sidelined by a small technical problem on day two of the Acropolis Rally of Greece.

Atkinson, who began the leg eighth place overall in the new Impreza WRC2008, which is making its debut on the seventh round in the World Rally Championship, was fourth fastest in the opening test this morning.

However, he had to call it a day before SS9 - the 16.60 kilometre-run through Pissia 1, when his car refused to start.

While a spokesperson for the team has confirmed to Crash.net that he will be able to re-start under the SupeRally format on Sunday, the electrical problem pretty much guarantees he won't be able to add to his current 31 point tally, which puts him third in the drivers' championship.

"Yeah it's fairly disappointing. We could have got some good points this weekend, and to have a small technical problem like that stop us at this stage of the rally is annoying," confirmed the Aussie.

"But that's life, and we'll just have to work harder at the next few rallies and get some points back. In a situation like that sometimes you have to laugh, but it's not a laugh of joy."

SS20:
Citroen's Sebastien Loeb took the victory on the Acropolis Rally on Sunday, pacing himself through the final day's seven stages.

Loeb, who took the lead on the second loop on Friday, slipped behind his team-mate Dani Sordo on day two, when he picked up a puncture in SS9. The Frenchman re-took P1 in SS13 though, when Dani himself had tyre problems and Seb went into the final leg 28.7 seconds up on his closest rival.

After almost doubling his advantage on the first stage today, the Frenchman could afford to ease off through the remaining tests and he eventually won by over a minute. The result puts him back in the lead in the drivers' championship, albeit by just 1 point.

Subaru's Petter Solberg meanwhile took the runners-up spot and in doing so gave the new Impreza WRC2008, which was making its competitive debut in the World Rally Championship this weekend, a dream start. ;D

Mikko Hirvonen inherited the final place on the podium, when Henning Solberg lost time with engine problems in SS17 and dropped down the leaderboard.

Urmo Aava was fourth in his privately entered Citroen C4 WRC car, followed by Dani Sordo and Britain's Matthew Wilson in fifth and sixth respectively, while Jari-Matti Latvala was seventh. Henning had to settle for eighth and the final drivers' points with Suzuki's Toni Gardemeister and Conrad Rautenbach completing the top ten.
