The Manufacturers’ Championship is still to play for on this final round, and both Citroen and Ford absolutely want it so will be pushing hard. The Ford is remarkably good in the expected conditions, as are their drivers Hirvonen and Latvala so they’ll be fast for sure.”

On what will be their 125th WRC event together with the Subaru World Rally Team, Petter Solberg believes his excellent working relationship with co-driver Phil Mills is critical to their success on this event.

“I like the rally a lot and we’re normally fast when it’s foggy or raining with lots of mud so I’m looking forward to it” said Petter Solberg. “I think pace notes play a huge part here. It’s about perfection with the notes and the way Phil gives them and helps with judging distances when visibility is poor. That’s where he is very strong. In the past we’ve generally always been fighting for a win or fighting at the top here. We had some good speed on Saturday and Sunday in Japan which gives us a positive going into GB. There are still a few little things we need to work on for sure, but there was another small improvement with the car in the last test.”

“GB is one of the trickiest rallies and one that takes probably a few years to get used to, but last year we had some good speed there” said Chris Atkinson. “I’m still cautious as it’s hard to know after a one day test where you really stand and we’ve got a few things still to sort out, but if you have confidence you can go a long way in the tricky conditions. Especially this year with some new stages I think confidence is the most important thing. It’s obviously quite difficult driving in fog, and there’s a fair chance of it being icy as well so they’ll be some of the most tricky and unpredictable conditions we’ve driven in. We’ll go there with the strategy that we’ll drive as fast as we can from the start, as we always do. I don’t think only having a remote service on the first day will have much impact on that strategy though as if you have a problem on any rally you’re usually out of the running anyway.”

Mikko Hirvonen's hopes of triumphing on this weekend's Wales Rally GB – the final round on the 2008 World Rally Championship calendar – have been dealt a hammer-blow after the Finn rolled his BP Ford World Rally Team Ford Focus WRC on Sweet Lamb 2.

The day's second run through Sweet Lamb was actually only the third competitive stage of the opening day after both runs through Hafren were cancelled due to icy and dangerous conditions.

Chris Atkinson has been taken to hospital after crashing the Subaru Impreza WRC he shares with co-driver St?©phane Pr?©vot on the opening Walters Arena spectator leg of Wales Rally GB, having received a knock on the head in the impact.

The pair headed into the stage – numbered seven but in reality the fifth of the rally following the cancellation of both runs through Hafren – lying in sixth position, 25.8 seconds shy of leader Jari-Matti Latvala. The only one of the day's tests due to be run to its original format in view of the treacherous weather conditions, the 2.29km sprint nevertheless began in heavy rain and under spotlights in the pitch black.

On the first corner of the stage ‚Äì a flat-out left-hander just 180 metres in ‚Äì the #6 car rolled and subsequently caught fire. Though neither Atkinson nor Pr?©vot were seriously injured, they are undergoing precautionary medical checks.

Subaru team boss David Richards has hit out at the FIA and slammed the current tyre regulations after the shenanigans that severely disrupted day one of the Wales Rally GB.

Richards believes that what happened on Friday was a travesty for the sport and the spectators. Indeed he is livid that the competitive mileage had to be cut by more than 50 per cent and all because competitors only had gravel tyres, while conditions were icy and snowy.

Speaking at the end of the leg, DR added that the solution is obvious and he reiterated calls for an emergency tyre should conditions be abnormal.

"It's been an extremely frustrating day. For some time now, after the introduction of the control tyre, we have said that there should be an emergency tyre available in the event of extreme conditions," he explained.

"When conditions are like today, it should be at the discretion of the clerk-of-the-course to use them. We should not find ourselves in a situation where we are not able to deliver to spectators, who have had an even more frustrating day than us.

"One of my guys drove down from Warwickshire at 6am today and hasn't seen a rally car in action. How can we turn round to the general public and say that it was too slippery for the best drivers in the world to perform? It makes a mockery of the whole sport.

"We've repeatedly spoken to the FIA about this and we've been told it's too complicated to sort out. We don't accept this."

SS19:
Citroen number one driver Sebastien Loeb came through to snatch the win on the Rally GB on Sunday, the final round in the 2008 World Rally Championship.

Loeb, who trailed Jari-Matti Latvala for most of the event, put in a charge this morning and despite picking up a 10 second penalty - for jumping the start prior to SS18 - he did enough to take the laurels, the very first time he has managed to do so in Wales.

It was smiles all round for Citroen at the finish, as the French marque not only won and had two cars on the podium, with Dani Sordo third behind Latvala, but the 1-3 result was more than ample to ensure the squad took the manufacturers'.

The BP Ford Abu Dhabi WRT meanwhile had to be content with the runners-up spot, both in Wales and in the manufacturers'.

Further down the order, Petter Solberg came in fourth for Subaru, while Per-Gunnar Andersson was fifth followed by Francois Duval, Toni Gardemeister and Mikko Hirvonen.

edit:
Sebastien Loeb's winning margin on Wales Rally GB has grown to 12.7 seconds after his jump start penalty for SS18 was removed, organisers have confirmed.

"Officials discovered a glitch in the timing system after reviewing all the times for the stage," read a statement to the press.

"However, Loeb was unaware the penalty had been rescinded as he completed the rally's final stage [SS19], battling for the win with Jari-Matti Latvala."
As a result, it is no longer the closest finish ever on Rally GB. That remains the 2004 edition, when Petter Solberg beat Loeb by 6.3 seconds.
